<p>Did you know that two accounts can average the same return over a fixed period of time and actually end in very different results. &nbsp;Confused? &nbsp;That's OK, let us explain.&nbsp;But first, in one of our other articles, we explain a concept called Sequence of Returns Risk. The Rate of Return Myth builds on this information to further illustrate why average return may not tell the whole story-- so we're going to dive a little deeper.&nbsp;</p><p><i>For our example, take the following into consideration:</i></p><ul><li>We have two accounts, each starting with $1 million.</li><li>One account is tracking the S&amp;P 500 and is taking on the full ups and downs of the market during an 22-year period.&nbsp;</li><li>Another account focuses on less volatility across the same timeline.</li><li>Both accounts average the same return over the 22 year period.</li></ul><figure class="image image_resized" style="width:50%;"><img src="https://res.cloudinary.com/dqmpt34da/image/upload/v1699896352/Rate_of_Return_Myth_Chart_2022_3532993f62.jpg" alt="Rate of Return Myth chart. The chart above helps illustrate the Rate of Return Myth--The idea that average return in a given year is the primary factor influencing account growth. In reality, it is the amount of principal in the account in the beginning of each year that truly drives long-term success.</p><h4>Simply put; It is not about the return received in a given year, it is about the amount of money you are getting the return from.&nbsp;</h4><h2>How does a Low Volatility Account work?</h2><p>By adopting the low volatility approach in parts of your portfolio, you may miss out on exceptional years that generate high returns of <span style="color:hsl(120,75%,60%);">25-30%</span> or more. The trade-off is that you also avoid the devastating lows of <span style="color:hsl(0,75%,60%);">-23%</span> and <span style="color:hsl(0,75%,60%);">-38%</span>. This is because inflation has a compounding effect, meaning the current inflation rate always builds on last year’s price increases. Once the damage is done, prices will only continue to rise. &nbsp;&nbsp;</p><blockquote><p style="margin-left:0.0px;">To put it simply. <strong>Prices will not be going down as long as we have ANY level of inflation.&nbsp;</strong></p></blockquote><p style="margin-left:0.0px;">For prices to decrease, we would need to experience deflation, which has only happen one time in the last 80+ years. Many people think that it’s mandatory to keep your 401(k) savings in the new employer plan, but as a matter of fact, you can roll it out at little to no cost (and no tax consequences!!). This move is considered a 401(k) rollover.</p><p>&nbsp;If the acquiring company decides to move your old plan into their current one, you may have the option to follow suit and your savings go into the new plan. Alternatively, you could transfer the funds into an Individual Retirement Account (IRA). This decision depends on factors like the new plan's terms, investment options, and fees compared to those of an IRA.&nbsp;</p><p>Estimating retirement savings becomes crucial in such scenarios. As an individual planning for retirement, you need a clear picture of how much you should have for retirement and whether the changes post-acquisition align with your financial goals. Larger earners are more likely to have retirement savings, and they also have higher average retirement savings. Conversely, those with the lowest salaries have a large amount of debt and little savings. It shouldn't be shocking to learn that, yet it's one of the most striking aspects of the retirement environment.</p><p>Contrary to popular belief, wealthy individuals may also have significant retirement savings gaps. Consider a wealthy household with a high mortgage payment and private-schooled children.
